Argo Island Villa International Design Competition – Winner

TECTONIC: A Vision for Sustainable Living in Penghu

Along the pristine shores of Penghu Island, this new villa building arises as a new but understated object that effortlessly merges with its surroundings. Recognizing the fragility of the peninsula’s ecosystem, the design team approached this project with utmost reverence and respect for the environment. With unwavering commitment to sustainable construction, the design uses circular design principles to minimize the impact on the environment by reducing material waste and ensuring adaptability for future use.

The building design is a perfect marriage between practical and sensible construction methods rooted in circular principles, while also creating an architecture that is modern and contemporary. It is directly influenced by the intense climate of Penghu Island, but also takes advantage of the natural formations—both ecological and man-made—of this breathtaking site. The result is a simple massing with a dynamic approach to sustainability, culture, and architecture.

Inside, the villa exudes a sense of serenity and tranquility. Thoughtfully designed interiors draw inspiration from the surrounding natural beauty, showcasing a palette of earthy tones and textures. Natural light permeates every corner, casting playful shadows and illuminating the carefully curated spaces. The villa’s design embraces a minimalist aesthetic, allowing the inhabitants to find solace amidst the gentle interplay of light, shadows, and nature.

Inspired by local traditional technology in which residents adapted their buildings to harsh wind and sun, we developed a rainscreen system as façade protection for the house’s Cross-Laminated Timber structural system. By embracing the island’s natural formations, both ecological and man-made, our design achieves a profound sense of place. The house captures the essence of Penghu Island, utilizing its natural beauty as a source of inspiration and harnessing its resources in a sustainable manner.

In this sustainable oasis, functionality and practicality converge with modern design sensibilities. The integration of cross ventilation, sun protection, and the use of locally sourced materials ensures a comfortable living environment that is harmoniously attuned to its surroundings. Extending beyond mere aesthetics, this conscientious approach to sustainability demonstrates how thoughtful design can contribute to a better, more sustainable future. In the spirit of Penghu’s resilient inhabitants, this architectural endeavor pays homage to their ingenuity.
